To gain access to the x-axis ball screw remove the horizontal covers that are visible from the front of
the machine behind the spindle head. Fig 1. Make sure the machine is off and unplugged.
1. Push the spindle head all the way left along the X-axis.
2. With an Allen key unscrew the screws as per Fig.1, then remove the metal cover.
3. Push the spindle head all the way right along the X-axis
4. With an Allen key unscrew the screws as per Fig.2, then remove the metal cover
5. Looking from down the ball screw you will see two Allen screws on the ball nut as in Fig. 3
loosen both roughly half a turn, push the spindle head left and right to feel if it is looser, and wiggle
the spindle head to check for backlash, you want the spindle to move freely with some
resistance but without any backlash.
The ball screw for the Y-axis is under the bed.
1. Lift the machine from the front and place a prop under the legs high enough for you to get
access to the ball nut screws Fig. 4
2. There are two Allen screws on the ball nut Fig. 5, loosen them about half a turn and push the bed
back and forth to feel if it is looser, wiggle the bed back and forth to check for backlash, the
bed must be able to move with some resistance but without any backlash.
Access to the Z-axis ball screw is the vertical cover directly behind the spindle head Fig. 6.
1. Raise the spindle head this will reveal two cover screws Fig 7, and unscrew them with an Allen key.
2. Ensure the spindle head is roughly centered, and the bed is all the way forward. Push the
spindle head all the way down, and make sure there are no cutting bits in the spindle. Remove the
4 remaining cover screws Fig. 8
3. Unclip the metal cover from the clear plastic lid. Fig. 9. This will allow the ball screw cover to
slide down.
4. From the top you can see two Allen screws on the ball nut (use your smartphone camera to
get an easier view of the screws). Fig. 10
5. Loosen the Allen screws about a half turn and push the spindle dead up and down to feel if it is
looser, wiggle the head to feel for backlash. The head must move with some resistance but
without any backlash.
